Led by vocalist Joakim Berg, the Swedish rock band Kent was formed in the industrial town of Eskilstuna, a suburb of Stockholm, in the early '90s. Berg, a self-described "David Bowie of the '90s," insists that the band was formed out of boredom, and while they never intended to make a lasting impression, two of their albums have reached gold status, making them one of Sweden's -- and Europe's -- most popular rock acts.
Kent's sound -- characterized by brooding guitars and themes of isolation, depression and frustration -- quickly earned praise in their hometown. After a 1994 live performance, the band was recruited by RCA/BMG and began recording their self-titled debut. The album earned Kent a Swedish Grammy for Best Pop/Rock Group of 1995.
Kent's second album, Verkligen, was released in 1996. The critics praised Kent's sophomore effort, calling them "the best band in Sweden." The album went straight to No. 1 on the charts and has sold more than 80,000 copies to date.
Isola, the first album to be recorded in English, hit Swedish records stores in 1997 and went gold almost immediately. It appeared in the States the following year.
